§ 36-217. Backflow prevention devices—Required.

  • (a)

    The city water department superintendent or his designated representative shall require the use of an approved protective device on the service line serving the premises, to ensure that any contamination that may originate in the customer's premises is contained therein, in the following circumstances:

    (1)

    The use is of such nature as to make it impractical to provide an effective air-gap separation;

    (2)

    The owner or occupant of the premises cannot or is not willing to demonstrate to the official in charge of the system or his designated representative that the water use and protective features of the plumbing are adequate to ensure that there is no threat to the safety or potability of the water supply;

    (3)

    The nature and mode of operation within a premises are such that frequent alterations are made to the plumbing; or

    (4)

    There is the likelihood that protective measures may be subverted, altered or disconnected.

    (b)

    The protective devices shall be a reduced pressure zone type backflow preventer approved by the water department superintendent as to manufacturer, model and size. The water department superintendent must approve the method of installation of any backflow protective devices prior to installation.

    (c)

    Installation shall be at the expense of the owner or occupant of the premises.
